Categorize Plus Repeatedly Disconnects

If the Categorize Plus add-in repeatedly disconnects from Outlook, then you may have a problem with the files that Outlook uses to store information.  There are two files that are often associated with problems in Outlook.  The first file is EXTEND.DAT and this is the file where Outlook saves information regarding your currently installed add-ins.  The second file is OUTCMD.DAT and this is the file where Outlook saves your command bars configuration.  If either file is corrupted, then deleting the file will fix the problem.  If you shutdown Outlook and delete these files, then Outlook will re-create these files from scratch the next time that Outlook restarts.

Deleting these files often fixes a wide variety of problems including improving load times and fixing problems with add-ins repeatedly disconnecting.  Please follow the steps below to delete these files.

Delete the "EXTEND.DAT" file.

  1. Shut-down Outlook.
  2. Depending on your operating system, copy and paste the path file into the Windows Explorer address bar.

    Windows XP:  %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\
    Windows Vista:  %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\

  3. The EXTEND.DAT file should now appear in the folder you just opened, simply delete it.
  4. Restart Outlook.

Delete the "OUTCMD.DAT" file.

  1. Shut-down Outlook.
  2. Depending on your operating system, copy and paste the path file into the Windows Explorer address bar.

    Windows XP:  %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
    Windows Vista:  %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook

  3. The OUTCMD.DAT should now appear in the folder you just opened, simply delete it.
  4. Restart Outlook.
