Upon opening of the email with the free license file nothing happened - i.e. Categorize plus is still showing that it is not activated.

I am sorry that you are having trouble activating the license. You need to be sure that you physically open the license email by double clicking on it. Do not use the Outlook preview pane to read the email, you must double click on the email to open it.
If CP still does not automatically prompt you to install the license, then the most likely cause is that the subject line of your activation email may have been changed or the attachment may have been removed by a spam filter. The subject line should read "Categorize Plus License File" and the email needs to contain the license file as an attachment. Therefore, if the subject has changed or if the attachment is not found, then Categorize Plus will fail to prompt you to install the license.
If all else fails, then you can manually install the license. This can be done by saving the license file attachment to the same directory where the CategorizePlus.dll is stored on your computer. You can search for the CategorizePlus.dll file, and when you find this file, then simply copy the license file that was attached to the activation email and save it to the same directory on your computer. You will need to save this attachment using the following file name “CategorizePlus.lic”. This will overwrite the existing file of that same name in this same directory. After you have saved the new file, then restart Outlook.
I apologize for the inconvenience and please let me know if this fails to resolve your problem.
